THS International Reception

The THS International Reception is a Welcome Reception for all new masters and international students at KTH. We aim to provide various events that suit different interests, but also allows students to explore new hobbies. Our primary goal is to make sure that every new masters and international student feels welcomed and included to ease their transition into the KTH student life. We work with the different associations and chapters on campus, to make sure that you learn all about the student life at KTH.
This is a biannual project run by student volunteers, with our Fall Reception taking place during August and September and our Spring Reception in January.

This is the first chance for you to meet fellow students from all over the globe, explore the campus, and discover all the resources that’ll make your time at KTH smoother (and less stressful). Expect a few weeks filled with fun activities, delicious snacks (that may or may not become your new obsession), music that will make you want to move, and plenty of opportunities to connect with people who are in the same boat as you. This is your moment to start building friendships and finding your place in the KTH family.

What actually happens during the International Reception?

So, you’ve just landed in a new country. You’re carrying two heavy suitcases, probably slightly confused, and wondering “What now?”

Don’t worry, the International Reception has your back! It’s hard to put the experiences you will have during the International Reception on paper (or your monitor), but let’s try it. During the International Reception, you will have the chance to enjoy a variety of events organized by our team.

If you are arriving on one of the Arrival Days, we’ll welcome you at KTH and to the best welcome weeks you will ever experience! Are you a party animal? Then the Welcome Party is absolutely mandatory for you! Not enough? Join one of the gasques or pub evenings. Most importantly, do not miss Nollepubrundan (you’ll learn what this is, but later).Maybe at some point, you have had enough partying, but don’t worry, there are plenty of other events to attend:

  • Arts 🎨 or photography 📷 is your passion? Join a visit to one of Stockholm’s beautiful museums 🏛️ or take part in one of the Tunnelbana (the metro) 🚇 tours and see one of the longest art exhibitions in the world.
  • Running, jumping, hiking, or climbing – and that’s still not enough? Then you should get involved in one of our many sports events, such as Hiking 🏔️, Volleyball 🏐, Capture the Flag 🚩, Badminton 🏸, and more.
  • What does Stockholm look like 👀? What’s the history of Stockholm 📜? Where can I find interesting and beautiful places 🗺️? If you like to immerse yourself in the culture of Stockholm, one of several city tours or a visit to Djurgården is the way to go.
  • I’ve arrived in Stockholm, but wait, I don’t have a bed 🛏️, kitchen utensils 🥄, or plants 🌱!? No worries, we got you! Join us on one of our IKEA tours, probably the most famous furniture store in the world, to get inspiration for furnishing your room 🪑, while also enjoying some Swedish meatballs (vegetarian options available) at the IKEA restaurant.
  • Are you interested in finding out more about KTH, the student association, and your rights as a student? Luckily, several committees 👥 at KTH will introduce themselves during our reception and show you how you can participate in shaping your studies 🛠️ and student life 👩🏻‍🎓 at KTH. Furthermore, several Chapters will show you the full range of their offerings. Don’t worry if you are confused about what a Chapter actually is; you’ll learn about it.

Your Buddy Group - Personal Support & Instant Friends

The International Reception is not only about participating in as many events as possible (which you should!), but also about making new friends 👫🏻 and receiving some guidance 🧭. For this, we have buddy groups. You’ll be matched with a buddy group, consisting of freshly admitted students 🧳 and some buddies, who are current students 👩🏻‍🎓 there to help you out, answer questions, and organize fun activities 🎉 with the group. For you, the buddy group will feel like a personal support squad 🤝🏻, but it is also the squad that knows where to find the best pizza 🍕, where to get the cheapest drinks 🍻, and which places in Stockholm 🌆 you must visit while studying at KTH. Therefore, participating in your buddy group’s events will make your start in Sweden, Stockholm, and at KTH easier and it will surely be a lot of fun.

Social Life = Activated

If you are excited about the International Reception, but on the other hand, sad that it ends at some point, then I can assure you that you don’t have to be sad at all. After the reception, the fun continues, since student life at KTH is vibrant and diverse. Get ready for the fun side of your future student life:

  • Enjoy some Fika (Sweden’s holy coffee break) with a coffee ☕ and a cinnamon bun 🍪.
  • Participate in (board)game nights 🎮, quiz nights ❓, or karaoke nights 🎤 organized by THS Central(this is us) and the Chapters at KTH.
  • Taste delicious food 😋 and take part in a fun evening 🎉 at a gasque, or enjoy an exciting day ☀️ and night 🌖 at Osqvik, a house owned by THS in the Archipelago in Värmdö, located to the southeast of Stockholm.
  • Dance till you’re dead (I hope you know that meme) on one of the many parties 🕺🏻💃🏻 or chapter pubs 🍺, or just relax at a spontaneous movie night 🎬🍿.
  • Join one of the many sport clubs, such as KTH American Football 🏈 or KTH Basketball 🏀, travel to Lapland 🦌❄️  with THS, or learn more about Swedish culture on excursions 🖼️.

Whether you’re shy or a super social, there is something for everyone, even after the International Reception has ended.

Who actually organizes all of this?

The THS International Reception is organized by the Internal Reception project team 💡, a group of volunteers responsible for the different areas of the reception. The project team is supported by a lot of amazing volunteer buddies who make it possible to organize and conduct so many events. Before the start of the International Reception, the project team works hard 💪🏻 carefully planning a wide range of activities designed to give new students a fun, diverse, and memorable start to their journey in Sweden and at KTH ✨. In August, the carefully prepared activities finally come to life. After the reception period with all the great events ends, we host a ‘Thank You’ party 🤗 to celebrate and express gratitude to everyone who contributed to the International Reception. Afterwards, we invite new enthusiastic and ambitious students to apply and become part of the next project team, which plans the next legendary International Reception 📅.
