THS Teacher of the year

Since 1985 has the students at KTH given out the award “THS Teacher of the year” to a teacher at KTH in order to honor good pedagogy and to encourage pedagogical development. The winner receives a silver apple as a trophy and a certificate at the fall graduation ceremony in the city hall.

Paris Carbone – Winner 2024

THS Teacher of the year 2024 is Paris Carbone at the department of Computer Science, EECS. The following is the motivation:

“Paris Carbone stands out as a prime example of what it should mean to be the teacher of the year. He has created a dynamic and engaging learning environment in his classrooms, where knowledge is not only understood, but deeply felt.

What truly stands out is his experimental and innovative teaching methodology. Breaking down complex subjects in a fun and engaging way. Each lecture starts with a theatrical performance, creating a light-hearted atmosphere where students more easily engage the topics at hand.

He takes great care to include all students, regardless of their conditions or background. He makes efforts to include and represent women’s voices in STEM and to make sure that everyone feels welcome in his classroom. He makes thorough use of the course evaluation system, citing it as a key resource in the development of his courses, and even uses it in ways to help and understand different student populations.

He shows profound engagement in his teaching, constantly striving for his own personal improvement. He takes great efforts to connect his students with his field of research, in which he is a renowned researcher and developer. He’s taken numerous courses to further his teaching ability, and uses all of this in ways which further his students’ possibilities to find a successful future within the field.

This is why Paris Carbone is the teacher of the year in 2024.”

Selection process

Each chapter can nominate a teacher in the beginning of the fall semester. A working group is recruited to interview and assess the candidates. From these interviews they select a winner!
