It is important to apply for Funka support well in advance so that KTH has time to arrange your support. If you have a more extensive support need, it may be a good idea to contact KTH before you even know if you have been accepted.

Student groups for Funka students

There are two groups within THS connected to Funka support and disabilities; THS Funka Committee and THS Insight. Both THS Funka Committee and THS Insight have a lot of knowledge about what it is like to study here at KTH with a disability, so they are really worth being in contact with. They have also created resources to help Funka students manage their studies, such as Insight’s  “Tenta P Planner”to make the exam period easier. 

THS Funka committee

The purpose of this committee is to work to improve life at KTH for students with Funka support or with a disability. The committee works with, among other things, collecting and compiling opinions and experiences from Funka students so that the union can conduct better advocacy work related to Funka issues. The committee has regular meetings with the THS Union Management, who can then pursue the issues further during meetings with KTH staff where decisions at the school are made.

The committee is convened by the Head of Student Welfare (SMA) at THS and you can apply to join the group at any time by contacting their chairman at studentfunka@ths.kth.se, who is elected by SMA.

THS Insight

THS Insight is a social group for students with Funka support, NPF diagnosis, disabilities or students struggling with their mental health. The group organizes events, student meet-ups and is a great place to meet like-minded people.

The group has a discord server you can join anonymously and talk and socialize with other students who are in the same position as you as well as stay updated on their events. You do not need to be a member of the group to join the server or to go to their events. If you want to help organize their events, you can apply to join their board by sending an email or DM on Instagram.

KTH’s guidelines regarding Funka support

Information about KTH’s guidelines can be found here, the dokument is called “Riktlinje för stödinsatser vid examination av studenter med funktionsnedsättning” and is currently not available in English. Here are some excerpts from that document translated to English:

“Anyone with a documented permanent disability should, as far as possible, be able to study at a university or college on the same terms as other students. Lack of accessibility for people with disabilities is discrimination and is defined in the Discrimination Act.”

“Financial and resource aspects are not normally a reason to deny a student with a permanent disability adaptation of the examination situation.”

If your support is denied, what should that process look like?

If the examiner wishes to deny support, KTH has specific guidelines for how this should be done. The following must be done:

  1. The decision must be communicated to the student in writing. (there is a template).
  2. The decision must be justified with regard to the learning objectives. That is, the examiner must justify which of the learning objectives cannot be examined if the support is approved.
  3. The decision must be made in good time, provided that the student has submitted a complete application on time. (see “Riktlinje för stödinsatser vid examination av studenter med funktionsnedsättning” for exact time intervals depending on the type of examination form to be denied).
  4. Program Responsible, Director of first- and second cycle education, Director of third cycle education or Director of studies should participate when the examiner makes a decision about support. That is, if the examiner denies support, you should ask whether any of these people are aware of the decision and whether they were consulted in the decision-making process.
  5. If pedagogical support is denied, the examiner must state which alternative examination forms have been considered.
  6. The examiner does not have the right to request a medical certificate. Only Funka handles the medical certificates and forwards the recommended support to the examiner. The examiner only sees the recommended support. Should a student need a new type of support that does not have a support code, the medical certificates must still be handled by Funka, who then recommends the support to the examiner. This also applies to support where the student themselves needs to communicate with the examiner about the support.
  7. Some doctors are more familiar with university support and therefore choose to write what specific support would help the student, while other doctors are not familiar with it and therefore choose to only describe how the disability affects the person. It is therefore not a reason to deny support because a support is not specified in the certificate.
  8. If you disagree with the examiner’s decision, you always have the right to appeal. The examiner must always include information about how to appeal in their written decision (this is included in the template).
